Senior Automation Engineer
This role involves designing, managing, and executing material handling plant automation projects from initial estimation through engineering, installation, and commissioning. A strong focus is placed on electrical design and controls, ensuring compliance with industry standards while delivering high-quality automation solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Engineering & Design:
- Estimate materials and labor costs for new material handling automation solutions.
- Specify components and create electrical designs for control panels.
- Develop well-documented customer approval packages.
- Utilize E-Plan and DraftSight (or AutoCAD) to create production-ready drawings.
- Follow UL 508A, NEC, and NFPA standards in industrial control designs.
Programming & System Integration:
- Program HMI and PLC systems, including Allen-Bradley PLCs and FactoryTalk View ME/SE.
- Conduct in-house system checkouts before deployment.
- Assist with on-site installation, troubleshooting, and system start-up.
- Research and implement new automation technologies.
Project Management & Customer Support:
- Lead projects by coordinating with engineering, sales, accounting, and mechanical design teams.
- Mentor associate and intermediate engineers, reviewing their work for accuracy.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and customer communication.
- Work with vendors and purchasing teams to procure project materials and address supply chain issues.
- Support sales staff by providing technical expertise.
- Assist customers via phone or in-person for troubleshooting and system optimization.
Skills & Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
- Strong electrical, software, and mechanical aptitude.
- Proficiency in E-Plan and DraftSight (or AutoCAD).
- Experience with Allen-Bradley hardware (PLCs, VFDs, SoftStarts, HMIs).
- Familiarity with Rockwell Software products (FactoryTalk View, Logic Designer, CCW).
- Background in industrial controls, material handling systems, and plant automation (preferably from an OEM machine builder or systems integrator perspective).
Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- UL MTR Certification (or willingness to obtain).
Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent problem-solving and methodical thinking skills.
- Effective communication with all levels of plant personnel.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
Additional Requirements:

- Ability to perform physical tasks such as standing/sitting for long periods, lifting, and stretching.
