Job Title: Tunnel Engineer
Location: Columbus, OH
Job Description: We are seeking a Tunnel Engineer for our Columbus, OH office. The successful candidate will have a minimum of five (5) years working on geotechnical, underground, tunnel, or trenchless construction projects, including both design and construction management roles.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications:
- Communication: Strong communication skills. Communicate technical and non-technical information in a concise, professional manner, including participation in technical meetings and workshops with owners, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Field Work: Ability to work in the field at various project sites, initially in the Columbus, Ohio area.
- Geotechnical Field Investigation Experience: Experience overseeing the completion of geotechnical investigations in both soil and rock geology.
- Construction Inspection Experience: Experience inspecting heavy civil construction, preferably on tunnel and trenchless construction projects.
- Water and Wastewater Design Experience: Experience with trenchless design and construction of municipal water and wastewater conveyance facilities.
- Design Calculations: Ability to produce design calculations (including numerical analysis) as required in support of tunnel and trenchless design including support of excavation (shafts & tunnels - including connection details and complex structures), and adherence to all local and national codes of practice for concrete, steel, and timber design.
- Geotechnical Parametric Studies/Evaluations: Ability to develop design parameters from geotechnical reports.
- Engineering Designs: Prepare construction plans and specifications, structural/geotechnical calculations and design reports, and technical memoranda.
- Technical Writing: Proficiency in preparation of Technical Memoranda, Geotechnical Data Reports (GDR's), and Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBR's).
- Company Representation: Increase visibility with internal and external professionals by participating in regional initiatives, conferences, committees, and community associations, including any identified industry activities.
Field-based assignments may include weekday, night, and weekend work. Office-based assignments will require a standard weekday business hours work schedule.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in relevant area of study
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in geotechnical, tunnel, trenchless, or underground projects
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE) License in Ohio
- Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, or related field
- Experience delivering tunnel and trenchless solutions for projects in soft ground and hard rock
- Experience supervising geotechnical investigations
- Experience with the inspection and design of rehabilitation measures for existing transit and/or water and sewer tunnels
- Experience in the planning, design and construction of tunnel and trenchless projects
- Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and teamwork skills
- Excellent technical writing skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, a thorough knowledge of relevant technical codes, operations, processes, and trends
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, contractors, and clients
- Ability to work independently, exercise independent judgment, interact with other staff, collaborate with other disciplines, and mentor junior staff
