About Our Client

An international mining firm, originating from Canada, is seeking a Principal Sustainability Lead in Brisbane to support thier business growth in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Since starting operations in 2016, they have consistently grown their production.

About The Role

This role is designed to provide strategic support for their environmental and social management (ESG) efforts. The position ensures compliance with sustainability regulations and permitting requirements, drives performance improvements, and supports our commitment to sustainable mining practices.

Key Responsibilities

    • Secure Approvals: Lead the environmental and social permitting process to ensure smooth operations and expansions.
    • Strategic Guidance: Provide expert advice on planning studies, environmental assessments, and permit applications.
    • Future Planning: Identify and prepare for upcoming sustainability-related permitting needs.
    • Compliance: Ensure adherence to environmental laws, regulations, and standards in PNG and other regions.
    • Regulatory Relationships: Build and maintain strong connections with regulatory authorities to support compliance.
    • Legislative Monitoring: Keep track of legislative changes and update policies and practices accordingly.
    • Management Systems: Develop and implement environmental and social management systems at both corporate and site levels.
    • Performance Tracking: Set targets, monitor progress, and report on key environmental and social metrics like water management, tailings, biodiversity, and waste management.
    • Continuous Improvement: Lead initiatives to enhance environmental performance and mitigate risks.

About You

Ideal candidates will have a degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience in environmental and sustainability roles within the mining and resources sector, with a proven track record in environmental permitting and compliance, preferably in PNG. Candidates should also have:

  • A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Understanding of environmental and social regulations and permitting processes, particularly in PNG or similar jurisdictions.
  • Experience managing complex environmental and social projects.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement environmental and social management systems.
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to balance operational needs and long-term environmental goals.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment, particularly in PNG.
  • High resilience and adaptability to work in challenging environments.
