Job Title: Health & Safety Manager

Location: Greater Hartford

A leading environmental consulting firm is seeking a dedicated Health and Safety Manager to oversee and implement the company's health and safety program across multiple states. This role reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and is crucial in ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment for employees and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Implement and manage the corporate health and safety program across all operating states, ensuring consistency and compliance.
  • Oversee ancillary programs and policies related to health and safety, including vehicle operation, hazard communication, equipment use, and subcontractor vetting.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for health and safety programs.
  • Regularly update health and safety policies to align with industry best practices and regulations.
  • Prepare reports and provide updates on safety performance and improvement initiatives.
  • Manage the health and safety department budget.

Exposure Monitoring and Medical Surveillance

  • Conduct and maintain employee exposure monitoring for chemical, physical, and biological hazards.
  • Manage the medical surveillance program, including pre- and post-employment exams.
  • Oversee the respirator fit testing program.

Compliance and Recordkeeping

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other relevant regulations.
  • Prepare and submit required health and safety documentation.
  • Manage the return-to-work program.
  • Maintain detailed records of training, safety incidents, inspections, and compliance programs.
  • Ensure compliance with third-party client safety audit platforms.

Training and Education

  • Design and maintain a robust health and safety training program.
  • Perform in-house safety training courses.
  • Develop processes to build a strong safety culture within the company.

Incident Investigation and Reporting

  • Build and maintain an incident management system.
  • Lead investigations into workplace accidents and implement corrective actions.

Hazard Assessment, Prevention, and Control

  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments.
  • Identify and maintain appropriate hazard controls.
  • Develop and maintain hazard control plans and site-specific health and safety plans.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with the COO and senior leadership to integrate health and safety practices.
  • Foster a culture of safety by engaging with employees and encouraging proactive safety behaviors.
  • Create a feedback system for timely collection and distribution of safety data.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 8+ years in health and safety management.
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, environmental health, or a related field.
  • Certification in Health and Safety Management (e.g., Certified Safety Professional [CSP]).
  • OSHA HAZWOPER and first aid/CPR trainer certifications are preferred.
  • Experience in environmental and construction services is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and safety standards.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
