A California-based electrical contractor is seeking an experienced Substation Estimator to support its growing portfolio of utility and infrastructure projects across the U.S. This is a fully remote position, and candidates may work from any U.S. location, within their own time zone.
About the Role
The Substation Estimator will prepare detailed cost estimates for high-voltage substation projects, including greenfield, brownfield, and retrofit work. The ideal candidate will have experience with utility-scale substation construction and a strong grasp of technical drawings, specs, and vendor coordination. Transmission experience is a plus.
Responsibilities
Develop detailed cost estimates for HV/MV substation projects
Interpret design documents, construction drawings, and technical specifications
Coordinate with engineers, procurement teams, and vendors to gather pricing and scope data
Identify cost risks, schedule impacts, and value-engineering opportunities
Generate pricing summaries, bid packages, and proposal documentation
Stay current on industry pricing trends, labor costs, and regional construction practices
Qualifications
3+ years of experience estimating substation projects (utility-scale)
Familiarity with substation components, design standards, and construction methods
Proficiency in estimating tools such as Hard Dollar, RSMeans, or Excel-based templates
Strong analytical and organizational skills
Effective communicator with the ability to work independently in a remote setting
Experience with transmission projects is highly desirable
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred
