About the Role
As an Interconnection Engineer, you'll play a key role in shaping grid-connected renewable energy projects across North America. You'll be responsible for navigating the complex utility interconnection process for both Front-of-the-Meter (FTM) and Behind-the-Meter (BTM) energy storage and solar projects. You'll engage with utilities, ISOs, RTOs, and internal teams to develop optimal interconnection strategies that support the company's long-term goals.
This is an individual contributor role with the opportunity to provide informal mentorship and guidance to junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
Interconnection Strategy & Analysis
Assess utility interconnection processes, tariffs, and timelines to guide development and engineering teams.
Analyze grid data and interconnection study results to develop strategic recommendations.
Evaluate interconnection upgrade costs and collaborate on project scheduling adjustments.
Use forecasts and hosting capacity data to inform siting, financing, and development decisions.
Project & Portfolio Management
Oversee interconnection study progress and application tracking across a growing project portfolio.
Coordinate efforts with utilities, consultants, and internal teams to meet key deadlines.
Assist in site selection through interconnection queue analysis and market research.
Stakeholder Engagement
Act as the technical lead and main liaison with utilities, ISOs, and consultants on all interconnection-related matters.
Collaborate closely with Sales, Engineering, and Pre-Construction teams to align on application strategies.
Occasionally attend in-person team meetings at the NYC headquarters to strengthen team cohesion.
Technical Oversight
Review technical documents, interconnection applications, and early-stage engineering designs.
Provide insights and analysis based on interconnection study outcomes.
Support project financing and hand-off efforts with subject matter expertise.
Lead internal training on modeling, transient stability, and PSCAD simulation execution.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred).
4-5+ years of experience in transmission/distribution planning or renewable energy interconnection.
Direct experience in PJM, NYISO, and ISO-NE markets.
Strong grasp of AC/DC fundamentals and three-phase systems.
Hands-on experience with power flow modeling and system analysis tools.
2+ years of PSCAD modeling and transient simulation, particularly for standalone BESS or PV + BESS projects.
Familiarity with ISO/RTO tariffs and interconnection protocols.
Skilled in interpreting technical studies and aligning strategy with business objectives.
Able to work independently and collaboratively to solve complex technical and strategic challenges.
Willingness to travel up to 20%, including to remote project sites.
Preferred Qualifications
EIT certification.
Experience with tools like TARA, ASPEN OneLiner, or SKM.
Background in utility protection schemes and substation design.
Exposure to Lean or Six Sigma methodologies.
Dual experience with both utility and project developer environments.
