Technician Manager - Building Automation

Overview: We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Hands-On Technician Manager to lead our Building Automation Systems (BAS) team in Northern Virginia. This individual will be responsible for managing the installation, maintenance, and optimization of automation systems that control heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and other integrated building technologies. The ideal candidate has a strong technical background in BAS, leadership skills, and a passion for hands-on problem-solving in the field.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Management:
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of BAS technicians and specialists, ensuring high-quality work and adherence to safety protocols.
- Develop training programs for junior technicians and support their growth in technical expertise.
- Oversee day-to-day operations, including scheduling, project assignments, and performance evaluations.
Technical Hands-On Work:
- Perform on-site installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of BAS equipment (HVAC, lighting, access control, etc.).
- Configure and program automation systems, including controllers, sensors, and software interfaces.
- Ensure systems are operating efficiently, making adjustments and repairs as needed.
- Provide technical support and expertise to the team on complex issues.
Project Management:
- Plan and manage BAS projects, from initial design and system integration to testing and final implementation.
- Collaborate with clients, contractors, and engineers to ensure successful project delivery on time and within budget.
- Conduct system audits and implement energy-efficient solutions to optimize building performance.
Client Relationship Management:
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients regarding technical issues and project updates.
- Provide on-site support during emergencies and respond promptly to customer service requests.
- Prepare reports, documentation, and recommendations for improving building system performance.
Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure that all work complies with local codes, standards, and regulations (ASHRAE, NFPA, etc.).
- Promote and enforce safety practices across all sites, conducting regular inspections and safety briefings.
Qualifications:
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS), with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Hands-on experience with BAS software, controllers, sensors, HVAC systems, and electrical installations.
- Experience with brands like Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, or Tridium is preferred.
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical wiring, and building automation programming.
- Proficiency in BAS programming languages (Niagara, BACnet, Modbus, etc.).
- Familiarity with networking and IT integration as it relates to BAS.
Certifications:
- BMS/BAS certification or related technical degree is preferred.
- Additional certifications such as LEED AP, ASHRAE, or OSHA safety certifications are a plus.
