Job Summary
Reporting to the Deputy EPC Director, the Systems Design Engineer is responsible for defining the basis of design for utility-scale solar plants in Japan. This role involves utilizing a wide array of software and methods to design the most efficient solutions, considering constructability, quality, cost, and performance. Key deliverables include PV plant layout, project configuration matrix, conceptual single line drawing, battery system, project bill of material, and PVSYST simulation. The steps, methods, calculations, and standard designs developed will be shared with the EPC team and other teams in the Tokyo office.
Main Responsibilities
- Run PVSYST and analyze the feasibility of projects.
- Create PV plant layouts for utility-scale solar projects using AutoCAD or Helios 3D.
- Instruct CAD operators to create PV plant layouts for utility-scale solar projects.
- Create conceptual PV plant electrical single line drawings.
- Create battery system conceptual single line drawings.
- Support project origination/development team with feasibility studies, cost models, and high-level design.
- Support procurement by developing and maintaining equipment specifications.
- Optimize PV design, including component selection, module string sizing, and conductor selection.
- Lead continuous improvements of design standards, specifications, and design processes.
- Provide expertise in creating standardized engineering drawings for PV and battery system layouts.
- Review PV plant layouts from contractors.
- Complete other duties and projects as assigned.
Functional Competencies
- Graduates from industrial school, Bachelor's or Master's degree in an Engineering Discipline (Electrical preferred but not required).
- Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience in designing PV plants greater than 500 KW.
- Wide knowledge of relevant regulations and standards (e.g., electrical code, building codes, design standards).
- Deep understanding of PV and battery system owner requirements, including equipment, warranty considerations, long-term reliability, price/performance sensitivities, monitoring systems, and total cost of ownership models.
- Experience engaging with and evaluating equipment vendors and service providers (including engineering firms and EPC contractors).
- Ability to read and understand electrical, structural, mechanical, and architectural drawings.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively lead, manage, and motivate junior and intermediate staff.
- Excellent verbal and written Japanese communication skills.
- Must be self-driven, highly motivated, and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to multi-task and manage numerous projects simultaneously.
- High degree of attention to detail and follow-through.
- Proficiency with PVSYST, AutoCAD, and MS Excel.
Other Requirements
- This role requires business trips nationwide for land site visits.
