Job Summary
An established and highly regarded firm is seeking a Project Traffic / Transportation Engineer / Manager to join its dynamic team in Chicago. In this role, you will manage and contribute to traffic & parking studies, transportation planning, traffic event management studies, and traffic signal/roadway design projects. This position offers a chance to lead and deliver on multiple impactful and challenging projects within the transportation and land development sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee the planning, permitting, and execution of traffic/transportation engineering projects, including land development and infrastructure projects.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring delivery within established budgets, timelines, and quality standards. Provide regular progress updates, assist with change orders, draft invoices, and help facilitate payment collections.
- Collaborate with internal teams to assess the feasibility of projects based on preliminary data analysis and prepare comprehensive reports, specifications, and design modifications.
- Write, organize, and review proposals, technical reports, and other project-related documents.
- Support business development efforts by participating in client meetings, identifying new opportunities, and helping to expand relationships with existing clients.
- Supervise and mentor junior staff members assigned to traffic and transportation projects. Provide guidance, training, and feedback to foster their professional development.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with clients, contractors, subcontractors, and internal teams. Participate in technical presentations and contribute to written publications.
- Perform additional duties as required to ensure project success.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- Valid Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in road, intersection, and traffic signal design.
- Familiarity with local permitting processes and regulations, particularly in the Chicago area and Illinois state.
- In-depth understanding of the IDOT Highway Occupancy Permit (HOP) process; experience with other state HOP processes is a plus.
- Proficiency in traffic engineering software, including HCS and SYNCHRO. Knowledge of the MUTCD is required. Experience with AutoCAD and MicroStation is beneficial.
- Proven ability to manage multiple clients and projects effectively, including developing and managing project budgets.
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills with experience guiding junior staff.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to analyze complex data.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Reliable transportation for client meetings and site visits, with a valid driver's license in good standing. Occasional travel may be required for fieldwork.
