Senior Hydraulic/Drainage Engineer (Multiple Offices in Virginia)
About the Role:
We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Hydraulic/Drainage Engineer to join our growing team in one of our Virginia offices. This position offers an opportunity to support and expand our design capabilities across the region, working with teams both locally and companywide. You will play a crucial role in a variety of transportation projects, collaborating with municipalities, counties, and regional planning organizations on critical drainage and stormwater management solutions.
As a Senior Engineer, you will handle a wide range of drainage work, from small-scale intersection improvements to complex transportation corridors. The role includes conducting hydrologic/hydraulic studies, drainage design, stormwater management (SWM), and erosion/sediment control (ESC) design and permitting across multiple regulatory agencies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead hydrologic and hydraulic (H/H) studies, drainage design, and stormwater management systems for transportation projects.
- Design and permit waterway crossings, storm drainage systems, BMPs, erosion and sediment controls, and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Prepare permitting documents, technical reports, and plans in accordance with state DOT policies and procedures.
- Independently lead and manage technical tasks, with the potential to serve as the project design lead.
- Utilize H/H design software such as ICPR, HY-8, NRCS (TR-55/TR-20), HydroCAD, HEC-RAS, etc., for complex design and analysis.
- Support the preparation of technical proposals, marketing presentations, and client relationships.
- Mentor and train junior engineering staff, fostering a positive and collaborative team environment.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- 15+ years of experience in hydrology, hydraulics, drainage, SWM, and ESC design.
- Licensed as a Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or the experience required to pursue registration.
- Strong knowledge of Virginia DOT specifications, policies, and procedures.
- Experience designing and permitting storm drainage systems, waterway crossings, and stormwater management systems.
- Expertise in regulatory compliance, including knowledge of local water management districts, environmental agencies, and permitting processes.
- Proficiency with hydraulic and hydrologic design software (ICPR, HY-8, HydroCAD, etc.), as well as MicroStation and CADD software. Experience with OpenRoads Designer is a plus.
- Experience with Alternative Delivery projects (Design-Build, P3, etc.) is a plus.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills with a proven ability to manage projects and mentor staff.
