Role Overview
Reporting to the Director of Development Engineering, the Senior Development Engineer for Solar/BESS will lead preliminary design and technical scope development for early-stage utility-scale Solar and Energy Storage projects, including standalone Energy Storage. They will manage internal and external teams to deliver optimized designs, cost estimates, and schedules that inform project development, PPA bidding, and acquisition diligence.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead for Origination, Business Development, and Development teams on energy storage and solar bidding opportunities.
- Oversee internal and external resources to develop preliminary designs, performance estimates, cost analyses, schedules, and risk assessments.
- Evaluate and communicate preliminary site constraints, cost impacts, and schedule risks.
- Select and optimize equipment (modules, inverters, racking) for project needs.
- Manage acquisition diligence requirements and costs on new opportunities.
- Represent our client in meetings and negotiations with clients, developers, suppliers, and regulators.
- Support RFP processes, including design basis, scope creation, and bid evaluation.
- Participate in site walks to collect preliminary data for early-stage design and documentation.
- Provide technical support for internal business development initiatives.
Qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years in the energy industry, including 2+ years of EPC experience in solar and/or energy storage project design, permitting, and construction.
- Knowledge of project design optimization, current market trends, equipment specifications, and costs.
- Experience with standalone battery storage projects, including design, suppliers, specifications, and integration with solar or wind facilities.
- Familiarity with project financing, independent engineer requirements, and EPC contract negotiation.
- Working knowledge of US and IEC standards, codes, and construction practices.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage client and contractor relationships.
Preferred
- M.S. degree or P.E. in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering.
