Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Safety Manager to join our team in Durham, NC. As a key member of our construction management team, you will oversee the safety operations for heavy civil construction projects, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, policies, and best practices. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of experience in construction safety, specifically within the heavy civil or infrastructure sector, and a strong commitment to promoting a culture of safety on job sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols for all heavy civil construction projects.
- Conduct regular site safety inspections and audits to identify hazards, ensure compliance with OSHA and other safety regulations, and provide recommendations for improvements.
- Lead safety training and orientation sessions for new employees, subcontractors, and other site personnel.
- Maintain up-to-date records on safety inspections, incident reports, and training logs.
- Investigate accidents, injuries, and near-misses, ensuring timely reporting and root cause analysis.
- Collaborate with project managers, field supervisors, and subcontractors to ensure safety compliance is integrated into project planning and execution.
- Stay current on local, state, and federal safety regulations and industry best practices to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Coordinate the implementation of corrective actions following safety incidents or inspections.
- Foster a culture of safety through continuous improvement initiatives, safety meetings, and engagement with all levels of the workforce.
- Provide safety leadership and act as a subject matter expert for site-specific safety plans, risk assessments, and emergency response protocols.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in safety management within the heavy civil construction industry (earthworks, paving, utilities, or infrastructure).
- Certifications: OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety certification required. Additional certifications such as First Aid/CPR, NCCER, or CSP (Certified Safety Professional) are a plus.
- Knowledge: Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT guidelines, and other relevant safety standards for construction projects.
- Skills:
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to assess safety risks and create actionable plans to mitigate hazards.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to perform safety audits and inspections in various weather conditions and on construction sites, which may involve extended periods of walking and standing.
