Hydraulics and Hydrology Engineer (Multiple Locations in Virginia)

An exciting opportunity is available for a Hydraulics and Hydrology Engineer to join a growing engineering firm with a national presence. This role will be based in one of the firm's Virginia offices. The firm is a trusted, full-service infrastructure engineering company with over 138 years of experience, offering innovative engineering solutions to clients across the country and internationally.
The Hydraulics and Hydrology Engineer will be responsible for independently executing and coordinating drainage system designs, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, and overseeing projects from the planning phase to completion. This position offers the chance to work on a variety of transportation and infrastructure projects, including those in compliance with local and federal standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently apply engineering principles to design projects, including hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of drainage systems, bridges, and culverts.
- Lead the drainage design, support schematic designs, and prepare plans, specifications, and estimates for projects.
- Manage project resources, track progress, and coordinate design elements with internal teams and external partners.
- Provide mentoring to EITs and Designers.
- Contribute to the preparation of proposals, Statements of Qualifications (SOQs), and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
- Oversee engineering phases within moderate to major-sized projects, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.
- Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic calculations for stormwater management, bridge hydraulic studies, and floodplain studies.
- Coordinate environmental compliance efforts, including permitting and design integration with other engineering disciplines.
- Prepare and review technical documents and collaborate across project teams.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Over 5 years of experience in Hydraulics and Hydrology with a concentration on Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) projects.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Virginia, or eligibility for comity through other jurisdictions.
- Proficiency in analyzing survey data, maps, and topographical information for design purposes.
- Ability to validate design computations and develop construction cost estimates.
- Strong knowledge of FHWA, USACE, AASHTO, and VDEW Stormwater and Soil Erosion Standards.
- Experience with software such as HEC-RAS, HY-8, SRH-2D, HydroCAD, MicroStation (InRoads or OpenRoads), AutoCAD Civil 3D, and GIS software.
- Experience in floodplain studies, hydraulic modeling, bridge scour analysis, and environmental permitting.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in client meetings and with internal teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
- VDEQ Stormwater Management (SWM) Plan Reviewer Certification.
- Experience with stormwater management, erosion and sediment control design, and permitting processes.
