Job Role Overview: As the Geotechnical Department Manager, specializing in Transportation Projects, you will play a pivotal role in leading the geotechnical engineering team to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions for projects undertaken in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Reporting directly to the Senior Management, you will oversee all aspects of geotechnical design, analysis, and construction support, ensuring the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Management:
- Lead and manage the geotechnical aspects of transportation projects, from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
- Coordinate with project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies to identify project requirements and develop appropriate geotechnical solutions.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to project teams on geotechnical engineering matters, including site investigations, foundation design, slope stability analysis, and earthwork construction.
Team Leadership and Development:
- Mentor, coach, and supervise a team of geotechnical engineers and technicians, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
- Allocate resources effectively, prioritize workload, and ensure timely delivery of project deliverables.
- Conduct performance evaluations, set goals, and provide constructive feedback to team members to support their professional growth and development.
Client Engagement:
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with clients, including NCDOT and other stakeholders, to understand their needs, address concerns, and exceed expectations.
- Participate in client meetings, presentations, and negotiations to secure new projects, expand business opportunities, and enhance the company's reputation in the transportation sector.
- Identify emerging trends, market opportunities, and client requirements to develop tailored geotechnical solutions and services.
Technical Excellence:
- Stay abreast of industry best practices, codes, standards, and regulations related to geotechnical engineering, particularly as they pertain to transportation projects in North Carolina.
- Lead the development and implementation of innovative design methodologies, tools, and technologies to optimize project performance, mitigate risks, and enhance efficiency.
- Review and approve geotechnical reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance:
- Champion a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance within the geotechnical department and across project sites.
- Implement and enforce safety protocols, procedures, and training programs to minimize risks and prevent accidents/incidents during fieldwork and construction activities.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to address environmental concerns, mitigate impacts, and promote sustainable practices throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of North Carolina.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, with a focus on transportation projects and familiarity with NCDOT standards and procedures.
- Proven track record of successfully managing geotechnical projects from conception to completion, including budgeting, scheduling, and client management.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire team members to achieve excellence.
- Proficiency in geotechnical software (e.g., PLAXIS, GeoStudio, gINT) and familiarity with CAD/BIM tools for design and analysis.
- Thorough understanding of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, geotechnical testing, and construction materials, with a commitment to quality and innovation.
