Director of Structural Engineering

An innovative multidisciplinary firm is seeking a Director of Structural Engineering to lead a small team of structural engineers. This leadership role requires a balance of strong technical expertise and client-facing abilities to ensure the successful execution of projects while fostering relationships with clients and stakeholders. The Director will play a key role in driving technical excellence, mentoring engineers, and managing client expectations while contributing to business development initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a small team of structural engineers within a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight on structural engineering projects across various sectors.

  • Participate in coordination meetings with other disciplines and design review meetings with supervisors, clients, and owners.

  • Attend work sessions with owner-client agencies to discuss project scope and structural design methodology.

  • Oversee the development of construction documents, ensuring adherence to project schedules and budgets.

  • Author and maintain structural specifications, select construction procedures, determine materials and member sizes, and complete necessary design calculations.

  • Review shop drawings, RFIs, change proposal requests, and change orders while incorporating necessary modifications into project documents.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, maintaining strong relationships and ensuring satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Utilize written and verbal communication skills to convey design and coordination details to the project team and author defensible engineering reports, memos, and email correspondence.

  • Conduct site observations and author reports based on site visits and inspections.

  • Collaborate with leadership to identify opportunities for business development and growth within the structural engineering division.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a structural emphasis; a Master's degree is preferred.

  • Structural Engineering license (S.E.) in the state of residence, if applicable.

  • A minimum of 10+ years of full-time progressive structural engineering experience.

  • Proven experience managing a team of structural engineers within a multidisciplinary firm.

  • Strong technical knowledge of structural engineering principles and design practices.

  • Ability to lead projects from conception through construction, ensuring quality and efficiency.

  • Excellent client-facing and relationship management skills.

  • Strong understanding of state building codes and applicable design codes, including ASCE, AISC, ACI, MSJC, and NDS.

  • Proficiency in common structural engineering and office tools such as ETABS, SAFE, RISA, RAM, ENERCALC, Excel, and Bluebeam.

  • Experience in designing various structural materials, including steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
