Senior Bridge Engineer
LVI Associates is partnered with a leading regional firm looking to bring on a Senior Bridge Engineer out of their Raleigh office.
This key position will involve supporting NCDOT General Engineering Services Consultant (GESC), providing vital assistance during both the pre-construction and post-construction phases. Your primary focus will be on the design and rehabilitation of bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and sound barriers. You will be responsible for ensuring quality control/quality assurance in contract documents and overseeing the preparation of detailed construction plans, specifications, special provisions, cost estimates, and other essential technical documentation. Additionally, you will contribute to the growth and development of the NBIS Bridge Inspection Program across North Carolina.
The Senior Bridge Engineer will also play a key role in mentoring and developing junior staff, coordinating work planning, managing project schedules, and driving growth initiatives. You will manage project budgets, scopes, timelines, and client relationships, while contributing to the design and planning of transportation infrastructure projects. This role requires someone who is proactive, innovative, and adept at identifying and solving complex challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and rehabilitation of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and sound barriers.
- Perform quality control/quality assurance reviews of contract documents and ensure compliance with engineering standards.
- Prepare detailed construction plans, specifications, special provisions, cost estimates, and technical reports.
- Contribute to the development and expansion of the NBIS Bridge Inspection program in North Carolina.
- Manage project budgets, schedules, scopes, and client relationships, ensuring timely and successful project delivery.
- Mentor and train junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and productive team environment.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to solve engineering challenges and deliver innovative solutions.
- Support business development efforts and assist in client communication and coordination.
- Travel as needed, both in-state and out-of-state, for site inspections or project-related activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
- A minimum of 16 years of experience in bridge design and engineering.
- Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in North Carolina or eligibility to obtain licensure within 6 months through comity.
- Strong background in designing bridges, preparing comprehensive contract documents, and deep familiarity with NCDOT procedures.
- Proven experience working with NCDOT Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and CMGC projects.
- In-depth knowledge of AASHTO bridge specifications and related industry standards.
- Proficiency with bridge design software, including MicroStation/OpenBridge.
- Experience in preparing complete contract documents such as construction plans, engineer estimates, bid quantities, specifications, and special provisions.
- NBIS certification as a bridge inspection team leader, including NHI-130055 (Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges) certification, is preferred.
- Experience with NCDOT bridge safety inspections and familiarity with WIGINS are a plus.
- Strong skills in business development and building client relationships.
- Experience managing project scope, estimates, and schedules.
- Proven track record in mentoring and leading a team of engineers.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
